Glossary

The following table defines terms used frequently in the Tecplot RS User’s Manual for your reference and convenience. A general understanding of these concepts will help you understand Tecplot RS.

2D Grid

2D Grid Plots are plots with two dimensions that display one plane (layer) of grid cells at a time. You can choose which planes to plot by specifying both the view (I, J, or K) and the plane index. Radial grids also have the option of displaying the views at constant R or Theta values.

3D Grid

3D Grid Plots show the entire reservoir grid in three dimensions, in an orthogonal or perspective view. The initial orientation of the view is preset, but the view is easily rotated, zoomed, or translated interactively.

Active Data Set

When you load multiple files, only one of the files is considered to be the active data set. The active data set displays by default in all plots and determines which entities and variables appear in the selection lists. It is also the data set to which the others are compared. The active data set displays highlighted in the Manage Data dialog.

Anchor Point

The fixed point of an object on the plot (such as a specific corner of an inserted geometry).

Antialiasing

The process of removing or reducing the jagged distortions in curves and diagonal lines.

Arbitrary Slice

An arbitrary slice cuts through the 3D Grid along any plane. The slice can span the grid or be clipped to selected cells.

ASCII Text File

A text file composed of code representing English characters as numbers, where each letter is assigned a number from 0 to 127.

Blanking

A feature of Tecplot RS that excludes certain cells and points from a plot. Tecplot RS includes two types of blanking: Cell Value Blanking and Pick blanking.

Branches

For a multi-lateral well, branches are the extensions of the well that branch off from the main well stem. Branches are usually made of multiple segments.

Cell

The space containing one increment of each index of IJK or IJK-ordered data.

Cell Value Blanking

A method of value blanking that enables turning on or off individual drawing elements (usually cells) according to the values of selected constraint variables.

Cell-Centered Values

Values located at the center of the cell (assumed to be the centroid).

Color Map

A color spectrum used to plot contour flooding and multi-colored objects.

Completion

A node along a well path where a reservoir fluid is produced or injected. The nodes are defined at cell centers.

Completion Profile

Connectivity

The line segments that connect completions to form the well path.

Continuous Contour Flooding

A type of color display representing a variable in which Tecplot RS assigns a color to each point in a mesh, based on the contour variable and color map. Tecplot RS fills each face with colors interpolated between the corner nodes, resulting in a smooth variation of color over the surface.
